The International Nineteenth-Century Studies Association (INCSA) is pleased to announce the 2024 Emerging Scholars Award.
The Award seeks to recognize an article or a chapter by an Early Career Scholar who works across disciplines to study the nineteenth century, not just from a limited chronological period (1800-1900) but also as a much broader intellectual concern today.
Eligibility
Entries can be from any discipline and may focus on any aspect of the long nineteenth century, including its implications today. It must be published in English or be accompanied by a credible English translation, and may be by multiple (and all early-career) authors. Submission of essays that are interdisciplinary, international and/or intertemporal is encouraged.
Articles that appeared in print or online in a journal or edited collection between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023 are eligible. The first format in which the work was published, whether print or online, is considered to be the official publication date.
Only one entry per person or group of multiple authors.
We consider Early Career to mean anyone within eight years of the completion of their final academic degree.
INCSA’s Officers, Board, Senior Advisory Committee, and Prize Committee members are not eligible to receive the award until two years have elapsed since their service.
Submission
Submissions will be considered only if they are accompanied by the article or chapter, an abstract, and CV corroborating that the writer can indeed be considered to be in the early stages of their career. Submissions should be sent to <international19thc.studiesassoc@gmail.com> with ‘Emerging Scholars Award Submission’ in the subject line.
Deadline
The deadline for submission is October 1, 2024.
Additional Forthcoming Awards
In addition to the Emerging Scholars Award, the INCSA Prize Committee is in the process of creating four different prizes, to be awarded on a biennial basis in the near future. The prizes will be based on four broadly defined categories considered to be ‘core’ to our aims and objectives: connection, collaboration, innovation, and publication. These prizes seek to recognize communities of academics that have enhanced our understanding of the long nineteenth century in ways that are relevant today. Please stay tuned for further updates.
